Bonita’s Clawson Seeks Radel’s Congressional Seat

Bonita Springs –Last year, Bonita and Estero residents became acquainted with Curt Clawson as a prime mover behind a successful effort to establish a citizen task force to study crucial water issues in east Bonita’s DR/GR. His concern was with water resources as a key to the southwest Florida economic growth.

Now the name Curtis Clawson is about to become a lot more familiar throughout southwest Florida.

On January 16, Clawson, 54, announced his candidacy for the 19th Congressional District seat currently held by Rep. Trey Radel. The Republican primary will be held on August 26.

Clawson, a business executive, has fashioned an “outsider” campaign focused on what he says are solutions for economic and job growth, “cleaning up the political process,” and “limiting the negative consequences of Obamacare until Republicans get the votes to repeal it.”

In an interview with the Spotlight, Clawson said he would conduct a “grassroots” campaign, going door to door, in addition to dedicating significant resources to media outreach. While he plans to fundraise, he said he would deploy his personal resources as necessary to match the funding resources of career politicians.

“I intend to compete hard, and I intend to win,” he said. By all appearances, that’s something Clawson has done all his life. An Indiana native, he led the Hoosier state in scoring as a high school senior, and was captain of Purdue’s Big Ten Championship team in 1984.

While in his early forties, the Harvard Business School graduate became chief executive of the world’s largest maker of wheels for cars and trucks. He hopes to join business contemporaries like Michigan Governor Rick Snyder as a business leader serving in elective office.

Clawson’s campaign logo features a basketball and the slogan “The Outsider for Congress” – a fitting image for the man who made the first three-point shot in Purdue history.
